“At the stroke of midnight, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom,” said India’s first prime minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on the night 15th August, 1947, when our country celebrated her liberation from colonial rule.
Our lives in present-day India have been defined by the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters, the men and women who believed in a free nation. Interestingly, the definition of ‘freedom’ has expanded manifold over the past 72 years.
In the modern-day context, this freedom could be interpreted in a variety of ways - from free speech to choosing one’s gender and identity to financial freedom. To celebrate this new-age freedom, we asked nine Indian photographers to capture ‘Freedom in India in 2019’. Here are the images that embody this new definition.
